The Lava Pond is a region on the south-south-west part of the UnderWorld, West of Everrain and way South of The Pits, formed by a huge rocky chamber with enormous stalactites and jagged slopes sculpted by the streaming lava that sweeps down to form an incandescent boiling river with unsteady ceiling debris down below.
Despite the looks, the typical smell of sulphur and even the occasional earthquakes and erupting mountains, the Lava Pond doesn’t give the impression of being much of a dangerous place because, even though lava geysers might explode at any time, spitting lava everywhere, it lacks deadlier aspects like extremely high temperatures and unbearable pressure rates of a real volcano. It’s certainly not a place Raimusa would call himself a home but still, it’s perfect for Creatures like Magmon, Zapetur and many others to live in — or to simply fool around, like Bierk sometimes does.
The Lava Pond is one of the favourite Locations of many UnderWorlders because its heated atmosphere powers up the Fire Attacks of all Creatures, giving them an extra boost at the same time it weakens Air Attacks by consuming any gusting winds.
However, much because Magmon lineage descends from Kaal’s, the UnderWorld ruler back in the time of the Ancient Perim — until deposed by Kiru as an answer to his incessant incursions to Kiru Village — the Lava Pond favours him even more by stirring the inner fire of his ancestors granting an additional boost to his Fire Attacks.
Here, the fastest of the engaged Creatures has the privilege of attacking first.
In the Animation, during the M’arrillian Invasion, in order to maximize the flooding caused by the melting of the frozen mountains of the Glacier Plains, Perim had to be partially reshaped. Milla’iin, a M’arrillian Chieftain, established a foothold in the Lava Pond commanding Khybon, the first of the Creatures Phelphor successfully brainwashed, to build enormous pipes on the East walls of the Lava Pond in order to inundate everything with the waters of Everrain.
Flooded, the lava river crossing the Location became a big purplish-pink puddle of slime surrounded by smoking mountains in a dark, echoing cave that negates Mugics almost at random while partially protecting both the M’arrillians and their Minions from the incoming damage caused by Mugics and/or abilities, clouding their targeting and coordination. And as a “pet project” of Milla’iin, one of the most powerful M’arrillian Chieftains, power is what determines which one of the engaged Creatures has the privilege of attacking first.
It’s uncertain if the UnderWorlders managed to restore the Lava Pond after the defeat of Aa’une and the retreat of the remaining M’arrillians to the back to the Door of the Deepmines because differently of the foul dams created in Erak’tabb’s Foothold in the Riverlands the very essence of the Lava Pond is a natural resource that can’t simply be created in an instant.
The Lava Pond first appeared during the events of Over-Under Rent Asunder when Kaz’s Takinom was battling Hercu-Leon’s Heptadd and then Tartarek. It was also in the Lava Pond where the brilliant plan Klay architected was staged, using a Flux Bauble against Major Tom’s strategy leaked by Krystella as revenge for spoiling her arrangement with Pyrithion after he freed Xaerv in the Iron Pillar during the events of Everything’s in Flux.
The Lava Pond appears, in Perim or in Chaotic, in the following episodes:
