The Danian homeland provides vital structural support to the UnderWorld ceiling, explaining why Chaor has resisted its demolition

Background

Located to the east of Everrain and to the south of the Doors of the Deepmines, Mount Pillar is one of the seven mighty Pillars holding the ceiling up in the UnderWorld, along with1 Castle Pillar, Ice Pillar, Jade Pillar, Iron Pillar, Stone Pillar and Wooden Pillar.

Despite the name, Mount Pillar isn’t just an ordinary Pillar. The Danian homeland resembles a humongous anthill with a complex of hills of varying heights and seemingly endless tunnels going several kilometres deep underground. Thoroughly fortified, the Hive is paranoically guarded, especially towards the central hill where the Queen’s chambers are located.

But unlike a real anthill, the Mount Pillar is a multispecies colony, with different types of insects living hierarchically in a somewhat oligogyny society, having, however, Illexia, the Danian Queen as their sovereign ruler. Still, as a eusocial society, Danians are hierarchically structured in castes, and each one of them is assigned to different, small tasks, knowing that however small they might be, when done well, they mean a lot and improves every aspect of the Danian existence.

1It’s uncertain if the Jagged Pillar and the Steam Pillar are actually attached to the ceiling themselves

Water

All Danians know that the Reservoir is the well-spring of life. It must be defended to the death

Water is vital for the majority of known forms of life. For the Danians that’s no different and for the flourishment of the Tribe, at some moment of their history, even before raising a hive, a well-spring was needed. One of these creational moments could be seen during the events of Losers’ Circle when Ajara, a Mipedian Scout, guarded by General Masaba and a small army, were in a research expedition investigating zones of desolation where water was disappearing from the jungle later known as the Al’Mipedim Desert.

After Ajara gets trapped in a large quicksand spot while trying to take a sample of the soil, she — and the two intruders who ended up accompanying her team — fall through a hole on the ground, reaching a large underground cave with a big group of winged Danians resembling bees and mosquitoes. Realizing that those Creatures hitherto unknown were the ones responsible for the water disappearance, in an emotional outburst she reveals their position to Makromil, a Danian Warrior in the swarm, thus engaging in what likely was the first Danian-Mipedian confront in the history of Ancient Perim.

While it’s uncertain whether or not if that well-spring specifically is the origin of nowadays’ Mount Pillar Reservoir, it is undeniably a vital part of the Hive, from past, present and certainly future, from which every Creature can drink life from, especially the Danians. Here, among the engaged Creatures, the one lulled by the Water has the privilege of attacking first.

In the Animation, during the events of Raznus Returns, Raznus and Odu-Bathax accidentally burst into the OverWorld Arsenal with a small army of Mandiblors. After being pursued by Intress through the tunnels the Danians made, Raznus explains to Maxxor — who arrived just in time to prevent Intress from getting infected by a Danian Parasite — that invading Kiru City was never their intention, that they were on a survivability mission to find a new homeland for the Danians because the M’arrillians, led by the Chieftain Neth’uar established a foothold in the Mount Pillar Reservoir, poisoning it with toxic water.

The foulness instated not only favours the M’arrillians and their Minions in combat — hindering any resistance attempt — but also brings a new threat to the fray by allowing fallen Chieftains to resurrect, vengefully bringing forth chaos for their reckoning day. Here, the bravest — or naive — of the engaged Creatures has the privilege of attacking first.

The Danians' lifeblood is also the root of the Mipedians' hatred

When Maxxor, Chaor and Iparu defeated Aa’une at Lake Blakeer, most of the M’arrillians retreated to the back of the Doors of the Deepmines leaving all damage caused behind. The unliveable state of Mount Pillar Reservoir, though, made it impossible for the Danians to return to their homeland right away. They would need to take back their well-spring by force and that would mean another war, but with the recently unravelled alliance with the other Tribes, Odu-Bathax, Valanii Levaan, Katharaz, the vengeful Klencka, now free from the M’arrillians brainwashing, and an army of Mandiblors and OverWorld footsoldiers, would have a much higher chance of success.

After another devastating war in a battlefield with wide opportunity for dispersal of Danian Parasites, Odu-Bathax got his lustful, bloody revenge over the Chieftain Neth’uar and the Reservoir was successfully reclaimed. Here, among the engaged Creatures, the children of Queen Illexia has the privilege of attacking first.

Though adorned with oah and jij plants from his village, one look outside his window reminds Raznus he's far from home

Even though always ready for battle, the OverWorld always valued diplomacy over strife and because of this feeling the Tribe named Raznus as the OverWorld Ambassador to the Danians and the daughter of Hune Canin, Kinnianne as the Ambassador to the Mipedians.

Whether it was a sign of good faith or for shady, nefarious purposes, Queen Illexia granted Raznus his own office within the walls of Mount Pillar. While it’s unlikely that after the events of Dangers of Diplomacy, in which the Danians infected Raznus with a Danian Parasite, Raznus had changed sides, thus becoming a Danian Ambassador to the OverWorld — after all, when Assimilation was complete he tried to assassinate Maxxor, the Location remained untouched, even though, regardless the recently sworn loyalty to the Hive, returning there could be painful to him.

Regardless, the Embassy has always been a place for diplomacy and since conducting business while a brutal metamorphosis is changing one’s physiology is not only dangerous but also unproductive, every Creature is cleansed from the influence of Danians Parasites when setting foot in there. Here, the wisest — or the dumbest — of the engaged Creatures has the privilege — or the indecency — of attacking first.

"Did you hear something moving? Did you see something moving? I think I just touched something moving..."

No matter how important the task a Danian is assigned to, protecting the Queen is a top priority. And regardless all the strict security in place at Mount Pillar, besides the fragile, although mutually beneficial, non-aggression agreement with the UnderWorld, the Danians live concerned with a possible surprise onslaught from the Mipedians, who still nourish a deep hatred for what their ancestors did to Al’Mipedim.

Not surprisingly, the gate leading to Illexia’s chambers near the top of the central hill is the most paranoically guarded place in all of Mount Pillar. A quite reliable strategy that worked well until a momentary quietude made a Danian Squadleader understaff the guards, replacing the most fitting Danian Scouts with low-ranked Mandiblors, thus giving Kolmo, a Mipedian Elite on a kidnapping mission, an almost free pass straight to the Queen and their personal bodyguards as seen during the events of Big Time.

Regardless of the scenario, succeeding in here requires one to be quicker than the eye — or eyes, thus, here, the fastest of the engaged Creatures has the privilege of attacking — or bailing — first.

From high above, Danians can see deep into the heart of the UnderWorld, including invading armies days in advance

Airborne patrolling is vital in any warzone and, aware of that, all Tribes react the best way they can. Because of the aridness and inhospitality of Al’Mipedim, the Mipedians simply trust their Invisibility to catch enemies off-guard; the M’arrillians spread their egg-like flying drones with mental link to the closest Chieftain; and both the OverWorld and the UnderWorld, given the much wider area to be covered, usually need Battlegears like a Torwegg and flying Creatures like Dractyl. The Danians, however, have a tactical advantage in this matter because from all of the seven mighty Pillars holding the ceiling up in the UnderWorld, the Mount Pillar is the only one1 with feasible access to the ceil itself.

This lookout, overseen by officers like Ghundac, provides the Danians with a unique strategical opportunity for a pre-emptive attack with their winged squad or, if things get ugly, the possibility of swarming the enemy with an overwhelming force with all available Danians, setting them all to fly like their ancestors once were. Here, the (really o.O) bravest of the engaged Creatures has the privilege of attacking first.

As the breeding ground of millions of parasites, Danians can infect every Creature in Perim a hundred times over

Besides their swarming numbers, the most important weapon at Danians’ disposal is the Infection with Danian Parasites usually disseminated by Controllers like Yondaf. Different Creatures react differently when a Parasite is taking control of their organisms but, most of the times, they become vulnerable to certain effects or mysteriously empower their Danian opponents in the most varied ways.

Differently of how the infection process has been depicted during the events of Raznus Returns, in which the Danian launches a spectral bug that allegedly takes control of its victim, in fact, a Parasite Launcher is used, similarly to those used by the Mandiblors under Skartalas’ command near the end of the Perithon, when several Creatures leave the Zizzok Tunnel towards Mount Pillar.

Regardless the method used for dissemination, these Parasites must be incubated and matured before used, and this process is made by the thousands at once at the Infectorium, an extremely noxious place for those in the early stages of the infection, where the bravest of the engaged Creatures has the privilege of attacking first.

As long as we never forget the fallen, they'll live forever

For the Danians, remembering the past doesn’t mean to be tied to it. Reminding of their ancestors and honouring fallen heroes, friends’ and families’ histories are eternally carved onto the crumbling walls of Mount Pillar constantly under maintenance by Mandiblors like Nakal, hard-workers underappreciated by the Danian society.

It’s a thankless job, but under the bitterness of an antipathic society, deep inside, it’s a rewarding one. A job that empowers the braves and weakens the powerful so they all unite as equal, as one, as Danian. Here, among the engaged Creatures, the one with their feet firmly rooted on their Earthen ground has the privilege of attacking first.
